Friends Village: A Unique Community

Friends Village Paxson Campus in Newtown Borough

Friends Village, founded in 1897 by Bucks Quarterly Meeting, is a small, unique community for older adults on two campuses in Newtown. Friends Village seeks to find innovative responses to the needs of middle-income older adults.

The majority of middle-income older adults cannot afford their housing and health care. This forgotten segment of the aging population has too little to pay for the high costs of continuing care communities, yet too much to qualify for financial assistance.

Unlike most retirement communities, Friends Village is not isolated or gated, but rather seeks to be outward facing and involved. We have opened our programming to the public so that we can be engaged with our neighbors and a community resource for healthy and active aging. Innovative programs such as our free Senior Planet technology classes support older adults who wish to stay independent, continuing to learn and grow.

On April 13th, 2024 Friends Village will host an “Afternoon in the Garden,” our annual fundraiser to support our financial stewardship and to help educate the wider community about clear steps toward enhancing our stewardship of the environment. The event will feature Dr. Doug Tallamy, distinguished professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, bestselling author, and co-founder of Homegrown National Park. Renowned for his groundbreaking research in the field, Dr. Tallamy has authored multiple books, including his latest New York Times bestseller, Nature's Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard.

Dr. Tallamy will discuss simple yet impactful steps that individuals can take to reverse the alarming trend of declining biodiversity. Besides Dr. Tallamy’s presentation, attendees will also enjoy a delicious buffet, book-signing, exhibits, vendors and a gift card and basket pull.
