Middletown Monthly Meeting will have it’s 335th anniversary this fall. The meeting has come a long way over the centuries and part of that journey is recognizing a dark period of the past and doing what can be done today to bring those ways to light and give long overdue respect to those who are known only to God.
On October 6 at 1PM, Middletown Meeting will hold a Memorial Service for the enslaved Africans and African Americans buried in two locations on the meeting property.
The event will begin in the meetinghouse. There will be a talk given by Jesse Crooks, Bucks County Historian, a Memorial Meeting for Worship, performance by the Lincoln University Gospel Choir, Keith Spencer - Baritone Vocalist, a reading of Manumissions (legal document releasing slaves from enslavement). Those gathered will then go to the first site where a memorial marker will be dedicated and the burial ground blessed. Keith Spencer, Baritone Vocalist will perform another selection of songs, and the choir will sing a benediction. The group will then go to the second location to dedicate and bless that area. Golf carts will be available for those of need.
A reception will follow at 3:30.
This event is open to the public. It is possible that parking and seating will be at a premium. Middletown Friends request that Friends arrive early to allow time for others to park and get into the meetinghouse and that Friends who can climb stairs to please fill the balcony first.
