Peace Center’s Youth Empowerment Project Presents Talent Show Fundraiser

The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) will present a talent show at the Peace Center, 102 W. Maple Ave, Langhorne, Jan 11, at 7pm.  The theme of the show is “Celebrating Unity: Face 2 Face, Heart 2 Heart,” in response to the events of Sept 11.  All talent show acts will spotlight the theme of unity. Donations from the show will benefit the Lower Bucks County Red Cross Homeless Shelter in Levittown.  YEP is an after-school program that empowers young people ages 13 to 17 to voice their ideas, feelings, and opinions.  The group meets on the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month from 4-6pm.  If you want to perform or join the YEP call 215-750-7220.

02-02-02 (Feb second) for Quaker Action!

This morning conference will discuss how to do effective action, and will be held at Arch Street Meetinghouse on the above date, from 9am-1pm or slightly longer.  Joe Volk, Executive Secretary of Friends Committee on National Legislation, will start us off with his insights and then there will be workshops led by specialists on “How to influence legislation,”  “How to organize in your community,”  “How to advocate for special groups,” and “How to use law for social change.” There is no need to register, but if you plan to come send email to emarsh@voicenet.com or call 215-848-0592.  Parking is free at Arch Street Meetinghouse.  Snacks will be available.

Peace Pals

The next Peace Pals will be JUGGLING!  Ann D’Silva and John Bailey will be there to help you learn to juggle, or, if you’ve been before, show off your new juggling tricks.  Bring your own juggling equipment if you have it.  How about bringing a juggling friend?

On Sat, Jan 26th, (fourth Saturday) the fun begins at 7 and ends at 9:30. Cost is $3 each. Peace Pals meet at Wrightstown Meeting. If you don’t know how to get there, call Sandy at 215-860-9747. You won’t need another permission form if you were there previously.  If you’re coming for the first time don’t forget to have your parent fill out the permission form on the back of the flyer.

First Annual Gathering of Quaker Public Educators

Paul Lacey, Professor Emeritus at Earlham College and renowned educator, will address the First Annual Gathering of Quaker Public Educators on Jan 12, at Friends Center, from 9:30am-2:30pm.  There will be workshops, discussion, fellowship, networking on bringing Quaker Testimonies into schools and more.  Lunch provided and free parking available.  For info: tomh@pym.org

The Good War and Those Who Refused to Fight It

This PBS documentary will premiere on PBS on January 15 at 10PM. It is a fascinating one-hour documentary that sheds light on a previously ignored part of the World War Two saga - the story of American conscientious objectors who refused to fight “the good war.”  Many were Quakers or others whose religious beliefs interpreted the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill” to include war.  Others were passionate pacifists who felt morally incapable of cooperating with a violent conflict, no matter how worthy the cause.  It is narrated by Ed Asner, and features Stephen Cary, 12-year-Chair of the Board of AFSC and former President of Haverford College.  If you want to get the tape call Suzanne Stenson O’Brien at 651-291-8891, or email at suzzo@bitstream.net.

Donated Van Sought

Are you thinking of taking advantage of  zero% financing to get a new multi-passenger van?  Would you consider dontaing your old van to Chandler Hall’s new program at the Quaker Settlement at Stony Brook in Princeton?  This program provides activities for seniors who are experiencing isolation and/or early memory loss, and includes many trips in the community.  If you can help, please call program director Susan Hoskins at 1-609-924-9715.

Reflections . . . In Photos and Words

You will want to see this eclectic exhibition of photography and more, presented by young Quakers of Doylestown Mtg on Sunday, Jan 6th from 12:30-2pm. This event, encompassing everything from the sacred to the inane is for everyone.  Refreshments provided.  Call 215-362-1965.

Peace Talks on WHYY

These talks are intimate and compelling stories of people struggling to move beyond violence: from land reparation in South Africe to tree plantings in the landmine fields of Vietnam; from creating “Petals of Hope” in Northern Ireland to dancing for social change in Poland; Peacetalks takes listeners around the world to meet people who are searching for new ways of living together following war or violence.  If you want to support Peacetalks, make a check payable to Newtown Friends Meeting, PO Box 224, Newtown, PA, 18940.  Attention: PEACETALKS.  For a presentation at your Meeting or info, call 215-860-1162.

Translating Faith into Deeds: A Quaker Summit on Iraq

Sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee

On Fri, Jan 18th, 5pm-8pm, The American Friends Service Committee presents “Translating Faith into Deeds: A Quaker Summit on Iraq.”  Representatives from 90 Friends Meetings who have endorsed the Campaign of Conscience have been invited.  The Summit will outline our past work in Iraq, generate ideas and excitement about future tactics, and help strengthen AFSC’s relationship with Meetings that have supported the Campaign.

Voices in the Wilderness

Denis Halliday, former Assistant Secretary General and UN Humanitarian Coordinator, and Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness for Iraq, will speak at Friends Center on Sat, Jan 19th at 7 pm.  Denis resigned his post in 1998 in protest over the continued use of sanctions against Iraq.  Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, has led over 16 delegations to Iraq, and will have just returned from a one-month presence in Baghdad.

On Sunday, Jan 20, at 1pm, Rabbi Douglas Krantz, among others, will speak at Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting.

Ramallah Friends Boys School

Ramallah Friends Boys School was damaged on Dec 13th by rocket-fired Israeli-American made helicopters.  AFSC is grateful that no injuries or loss of life were sustained in the attack as classes were not in session.

Doylestown Meeting Friends continue their Silent Vigil for Peace

Doylestown Meeting Friends continue their Silent Vigil for Peace at the corner of Court & Main Streets, and invite members from other Meetings to participate as well.  The Vigil is from 6pm-7pm every Tuesday.  Call 215-345-1714.

Draft Counselor Training

On Jan 5th from 10am-3:30pm, Draft Counselor Training will be at Arch St Meetinghouse.  This workshop will deal specifically with training current draft law, Selective Service System regulations, and counseling techniques to assist young people thinking about conscientious objection and registration for the military draft. Brown bag lunch. Call 610-399-1435.

Stamps Wanted

Don’t forget to save the stamps on your Christmas envelopes!  Send them to: Karen Shaudys, 871 Dolington Rd., Newtown, PA 18940.

Blankets for Afghanistan

Quakertown Meeting put out two press releases in their area regarding Blankets for Afghanistan.  The out-pouring of blankets was amazing.  Friends and non-Friends brought their blankets to the Meetinghouse.  Some left their blankets at the door even though it was not open.  Some drove their blankets from far distant places.  Others sent checks.  All in all, the Meeting received  250 blankets.  It took three cars full of blankets to get them to Friends Center in Philadelphia!

Sid Cadwallader called every Meeting in our Quarter to see if they wanted to get blankets for Afghanistan at $5.85 each.  Sid got the blankets from a wholesaler and the wholesaler took them down to 1515 Cherry St to be shipped.  He got 240 blankets for about $1400!  All in all, Friends in all our Meetings have gotten on the blanket brigade!

Right Sharing of World Resources

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, Right Sharing of World Resources received a great gift - many notes of sympathy from their project partners around the world!
