Some Results of Called Session on Nov 10th.

After worship, Friends from organizations spoke, including American Friends Service Committee, Friends Committee on National Legislation, and Thom Jeavons, General Secretary for PYM, who also said that there will be a Poster for Peace coming out soon.  There were about 500 hundred people there.  Every Meeting in our Quarter had a representative there!  Thoughts and ideas on what to do next bubbled up from the Friends assembled.  Francis Brown suggested coordinating with all peace organizations.  Others suggested that we might have more public statements as a Quaker voice in America.  Someone else suggested that PYM empower Arlene Kelly, Clerk of Yearly Meeting, Tom Jeavons, and Interim Meeting, to respond quickly to newsworthy events.  Find Friends in your Meeting who were there and talk to them about what went on.

Doylestown Meeting continues its Silent Vigil for Peace every Tuesday, from 6 - 7 pm, at the corner of Court and Main Streets in Doylestown.  All Friends are invited to participate in this vigil.  Friends gather informally in the garden of the Courthouse after the vigil.  Call Larry Miller at 215-345-1714 for more information.

Wrightstown Meeting had an informal Buy-A-Blanket (at $22.50 each) to be sent to American Friends Service Committee.  Later, thirty-two heavy-duty woolen blankets were taken to AFSC in Philadelphia to be sent to Pakistan.  Your Meeting might want to consider doing this.  Deadline to ship blankets is December 31, 2001!

Outreach Cmttee Query: Is your Meetinghouse sign visible from both ways? Is it lit up? Does it have color? Does it stand out? Does it have the Quaker Q with a dove on it? Does it appear welcoming? Does it have the time of worship on it?

Nine students/parents from Bucks Quarter signed in at the Quaker College Fair on October 20th.  Judy Van Hoy (PYM) believes our Quarter holds the record for the most sign-ins.

Beginning in January 2002, Rosemary McQuate will be Clerk of Doylestown Monthly Meeting.

Now that the holiday season is imminent, Friends may be looking for ways to spread Christmas joy while avoiding the holiday spending frenzy.  The Heifer Project International offers one way.  Did you know that for just $20 you can give a flock of baby chicks, or 3 rabbits ($60), or a pig ($120) to a needy family in the Third World?  More info:1-800-698-2511.

The Michener Art Museum and the Mercer Museum will have a Holiday Open House on Tuesday, Dec 11, from 7 - 9 pm.  Friends are invited to take advantage of this opportunity.  Free admission to both museums.  No registration required.

Doylestown Friends Meeting has put out a press release regarding blankets, quilts, and sleeping bags in good condition as well as cash to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan refugees.  Donations will be collected in the Cross Keys Center, 606 N. Main St., Dec 15th, from 9-noon, and on Sun Dec 16th from noon to 4.  The collection site is made available through the courtesy of John Thompson, of The Thompson Organization in Doylestown. Call 215-345-1714.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee

PYM Interim Meeting minuted support for Barbara Lee, 9th District of California.  The text is: PYM commends your decision to vote against the resolution to authorize the President to use military force in response to the terrorist attacks.  We agree with your statement in Congress on Friday, Sept 14, 2001, “that military action will not prevent future acts of international terrorism against the United States,” that the results of such action could “spiral out of control,” and that by taking military action we risk “becoming the evil we deplore.”  We support your courage in taking a position that you knew would be unpopular.
