Wally Evans and Sandy Langhart were pleased to be
invited to a program at George School about George School's student trip to
Nicaragua, for which many Middle School and Young Friends gathered money to
once again help the school buy supplies.
Carolyn Lyday led the program.
Students who had gone on the trip attended the program, along with
George School staff. The project was
originally started by a group of Philadelphians who first supported victims of
torture from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, El Salvador, and Guatemala
back in 1977. During that time the
Philadelphians started a school in Mexico City for the refugee children. Later, the Philadelphians turned their
efforts to a boarding school in Nicaragua for abandoned children, war orphans
and children at risk. Later the program
was dropped because of the Chamorro government. The Philadelphians now support the Centro Educativo Nicaraguito
School in Managua, under the leadership of Rafaela Torres Ugarte, who is the
principal. Rafaela spoke of her long
ties with the Philadelphians and George School. Mabel Houghton translated for Rafaela. A video was shown of some of the activities of the school. Everyone gathered afterward for liquid
refreshments and cookies. The Quarter
is proud to be part of this.
