Local AFSC Office in Philadelphia?

Groups of Friends throughout the Yearly Meeting are considering the possibility of a local AFSC office to serve the needs of our neighbors in the Philadelphia area. The Philadelphia office would be under the care of the Mid-Atlantic Regional AFSC office. Friends are asked to consider what the focus of the new local chapter might be. What would our part in this be or become? What is our vision for this? What kind of support might be asked of us? This issue was discussed at Quarterly Meeting. It is hoped that Monthly Meetings will discuss this. For information call our contact, Jonathan Snipes, at 736-1856.

A Quaker Book of Wisdom

Friends and non-Friends gathered at Barnes and Noble on October 29th to hear Robert Lawrence Smith talk about his book, A Quaker Book of Wisdom. He wrote, "The most valuable aspect of religion is that it provides us with a framework for living. I have always felt that the beauty and power of Quakerism is that it exhorts us to live more simply, more truthfully, more charitably." Mr. Smith is the former headmaster of Sidwell Friends School. His book is a combination of stories of his life and Quaker philosophy. It is a sincere, charming and peaceful read.
