Details about Past and Coming Events

Young Adult Friends Gathering - Pendle Hill
Young Adult Friends will ponder "What Does God Have In Store for You Next?" at the Young Adult Friends Gathering at Pendle Hill on September 5th-7th. This gathering will assume that change is a necessary, continuing process for becoming your authentic self. The fees are $75 for double room, $100 for a single, and include room, board, and tuition. This program is available to those ages 18-40 only. For more information call 1-800-742-3150.

PYM Positions Available

There are currently six positions available at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting:

Peace Tax Fund and Senator Arlen Specter
According to Jeff Gabriel, Senator Specter’s aide, Senator Spector is very supportive of the Peace Tax Fund Bill. While Senator Specter is recovering from heart surgery, it is important that he receive letters from his constituents. The letters should be addressed to:
The Honorable Arlen Specter
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510 (Phone: 202-224-4254)
email: senator_specter@specter.senate.gov

Persons who oppose war and preparation for war currently face a dilemma: if they obey their conscience and refuse to pay taxes which support the military, they must disobey the law. Under the Peace Tax Fund Bill, the federal taxes of conscientious objectors would go into a trust fund which would be used for non-military purposes only.

Managing Change & Difficulties in Meetings

PYM is offering a free two-hour guided discussion/consultation on managing change and difficulties in the life of the Meeting. Discussions will be led by Caroline Packard, PYM’s Conflict Response Specialist, and include how to effectively and lovingly deal with changes, difficult decisions, and disagreements in your meeting. What does your Meeting do when a family is breaking up? when a committee is bogging down? when one member is seen as difficult? How does your meeting handle major decisions about whether to build an addition? what to do about your Friends school? right use of financial resources? Call Caroline Packard at 1-800-220-0796, ext 7029.

Snippets of News from the Quarter and Other Places

Thanks to the many, many Friends who helped out at theGrange Fair tent! The brochures for the Quaker Heritage Celebration!, along with lots of other materials from FGC and our schools and facilities, were carried away. Some 2025 people visited, which is about 1000 more than we usually see!

More than fifty Friends enjoyed acovered dish dinner and singalong at Buckingham Friends School on August 8th. For Friends who couldn’t make it this time we will do it again this winter! Quakertown Meeting has aBirthday Bash the first Sunday of every month to celebrate Friends’ birthdays.

Tom and Margaret Richie (Buckingham Meeting) have permanently protected their historic property on Byecroft Road through the sale of a conservation easement to the township. The twenty-one acre property is part of anoriginal grant of land by William Penn to the Bye family in 1699. David Berger (Falls Mtg) and Chad Brophy (Solebury Mtg) started acar washing business this summer. They do cleaning, washing, and detailing. The cars are washed and waxed at the owner’s property or they pick them up and do the work at their own homes. Call 741-5902 or 579-2676 if you need help with your car.Yearly Meeting needs more yarn for the afghans which get sent all over the world. If you have spare yarn to share, please call Amy Kurkjian at 241-7214. As most of you know,Kenya has the highest concentration of Quakers in the world. The Friends World Committee for Consultation received a report from Ecumenical News International in which it was suggested that the US Embassy should be relocated away from the center of the city. One person wrote about the walking dead — people were walking away from the direction of the American Embassy who had been cut completely open with the internal organs showing. A copy of this report is available through the coordinator’s office. Call 860-9747.

Clerk’s Corner - -

Friends gathered for a lovely day for Bucks Quarterly Meeting at Falls on August 16th. The morning program had something for everyone whether you wanted to indulge the intellectual, spiritual or playful sides of your personality. I found great joy in International Folk Dancing so early on a First Day. The Irish girls who stayed with the Daly family this summer were happy for their American experiences but sobered by the realization that they were returning to a hometown devastated by a senseless bombing the previous day. Let’s hold them and their neighbors in the Light.

During Business Meeting it was gratifying to hear of the vibrancy, love and work that we do so diligently.

To encourage Monthly Meeting input on the upcoming Threshing Session on our schools on November 15th we hope to obtain the questions in advance and distribute them to the Monthly Meetings and then come together as a Quarter in some format for discussion.

Janet Braker, Clerk
