"Be Open. Be Transformed. Be Faithful." is the theme of this year's Friends General Conference Gathering at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, from June 28th to July 5th. If you have not received an Advance Program from FGC, call the coordinator. The list of special events and wonderful workshops is terrific!
May 9th is the date for the 10th Annual Swim-A-Thon at Chandler Hall. The event helps raise money for Hospice patients without adequate insurance or financial resources. A team consists of an adult matched with a child or youth. The object is to swim or walk as many lengths of the pool as possible within a 30-minute period. Pledges of money may be for each completed length or for the entire 30-minute period. Find a sponsor or two. Grab your grandchild and help Hospice!
Doylestown Meeting is having a singalong on Saturday, May 3rd, at the home of Gerry and Stan Broadbent in Gardenville. The fun begins at 7:30 PM. Children are most welcome. Please bring fingerfood. All Friends are invited! For more information and directions, call 766-7794.
The day was warm, but not too warm. It was a good thing, too, as Young Friends shoveled several yards of dirt from where it was dumped to a low, water-sogged area of an Interfaith Housing property. There was the fill the wheelbarrow team, the move and dump the dirt hero (Scott Laughlin), the rake the dirt team, and the move the rocks and make a stone wall team. The yard looked better when we left and we knew we had accomplished a lot!
Friends and professionals from the health care field are invited to a two-day seminar on Fitness for Older Adults. The cost is $72 for one day or $150 for both days. The event is scheduled for May 17th and 18th. For more information, call Judy Kelly at Chandler Hall (860-9216).
The George School students who went to Nicaragua last month (including Hunter Wells, Bill Kirby, and Holly Mueller from Bucks Quarter) worked as teachers' aides at the Centro Educativo Nicaraguito School in Managua. All of the American students spoke Spanish both in school and in the homes where they stayed. The funds resulting from Volleyball All Night that were sent with the group were used for school supplies and scholarships. Next year the school will have to add a grade which will probably be a second story on an existing classroom building. Hopefully, Friends in the Quarter will support Volleyball All Night again so that we can help with that effort. It was not all work and no play for the George School students. On weekends and evenings they also took in Lake Nicaragua, Pacific beaches, volcanoes, and a volcanic lagoon.
The last Teen Night until next fall is on Saturday, May 17th at 7:30 PM at Wrightstown Meeting. Don't miss it! Bring a friend, a snack to share, and $1 to help cover costs. Need a ride? Call a friend and arrange a parents' carpool. Questions? Call Laurel Mueller at 355-0659 or the coordinator at 860-9747.
The BQM singing group will meet at Wrightstown Meeting May 17th at 10:00 AM. Jonathan Snipes and Chris Kerr will lead.
The Interfaith Housing Development Corporation of Bucks County (for whom our Young Friends volunteer at least once a year) is in great need of household furniture for previously homeless clients who have found somewhere to live. These people are being referred to the Interfaith Housing furniture warehouse by 32 local social service agencies. Interfaith Housing will accept furniture and linens and housewares and recycle them through the warehouse. There is no charge to those in need. If you have any of the items mentioned above, particularly beds, please call Interfaith Housing at 781-3949. If you can donate some time at the warehouse by driving to collect furniture, repairing furniture, stocking shelves, or acting as inventory clerk, call the number above.
If your meeting has Middle School and Young Friends interested in PYM's programs but unable to take that first step, you can invite Mike Ayers (609) 478-4618 and Cookie Caldwell (241-7222) or Melanie Douty (241-7171) and Bill Robling (794-3802) to your First Day class. Mike and Cookie run the Young Friends programs and Melanie and Bill run the Middle School programs. They would be happy to visit and talk about the awesome things that happen at the gatherings.
Makefield holds a meeting for worship each Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. Feel free to attend.
Doylestown Meeting invited Thom Jeavons to a potluck supper and Meeting for Business on April 8th. Thom enjoyed dinner with Friends and spoke afterwards. He also answered questions put to him by Doylestown members.
If you missed Lehigh Valley's Open House on April 27th, you will want to visit the second Open House which is in conjunction with Yearly Meeting at Allentown in July. The date is Friday, July 18th, from 4:00 - 5:30 PM.
Westfield Friends' Worship and Ministry Committee is having "Spring Potluck Dinners" -- five of them on one evening! The purpose includes but goes beyond socializing to exploring a question related to the spiritual condition of Westfield's community of Friends. Each person may select only one of the following topics and attend that dinner:
Falls Meeting's new addition is up and running. Friends and visitors (including the Coordinator) enjoyed a delicious potluck breakfast in the new wing on Easter Sunday. The date for the big celebration has been pushed up to June 8th. There is still work to do outside and Friends at Falls want to accomplish that first, not only for beautification but for safety reasons.
Yardley Meeting has a Supper for Seekers once a month, under the leadership of Paula and Howard Cell. Interested Friends bring a dish to share, followed by discussion on a specific topic, decided on by the seekers. Recently started, Supper for Seekers is popular with Yardley members.
The new construction at Friends Village is nearing completion. Residents will soon be moving into the two new in-house suites. Everyone is looking forward to using the new sun room for various activities, including watching the resident gardeners hard at work!
Will Friends in Monthly Meetings please take pictures and lend them to the Coordinator for the Grange Fair exhibit in August? Last year our guests spent lots of time looking at pictures of Friends in action.
To have your events listed in the May issue of Quakerphrenalia, please notify the Coordinator by April 19:
