Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at Arch Street

A one-day Yearly Meeting is planned for Saturday, March 22nd, at Arch Street Meetinghouse. The adult business session will consider the Yearly Meeting budget for 1997-98 and nominations for committee appointments. An evening panel discussion will focus on "The Challenges of the Former Yugoslavia." Registration begins at 9 AM, worship at 9:30 AM, with the sessions to begin immediately afterwards. There is a children's program as well for infants through Middle School age children. The theme is "Brothers and Sisters All" which will also be the theme for the Children's Program at residential Yearly Meeting at Allentown on July 15-20. Please register children for the March 22nd program as early as possible. Call the Religious Ed Committee at 215-241-7008.

Volleyball All Night for Middle School and Young Friends

Middle School and Young Friends are invited to play volleyball all night at the Sports Center on the George School campus to help raise funds for the Centro Educativo Nicaraguito School in Managua, Nicaragua. The date for this is Friday, March 7th, at the Sports Center on the George School campus. Ask members of your meeting to make a donation to the school because you will be staying up all night to help raise funds for this school. Send your donations in check form with your registration. Bring additional cash donations with you on March 7th. Let's see if we can make a difference for the children at Centro Educativo Nicaraguito School! Eat dinner before you come. Bring snacks like popcorn, cookies, pretzels, chips to share. Drinks will be provided as well as hot pizza rather late in the evening to keep us going. We will revive ourselves with a dip or two in the pool so you'll need a swimming suit and towel. Breakfast will be provided. Arrive at 7:30 PM Friday. Pick-up is 7:30 AM on Saturday. We need parents to help out as well (in shifts). Ask your parents to sign up with Sandy (860-9747). Flyers are out. If you did not receive one, call Sandy.

Thoughts on Friends Village

"One thing difficult for me to understand is, how in this world in turmoil, I ever had the good fortune to spend my 80's in this civilized place, where people do genuinely care for each other; where the staff are not servants but friends, where there is a greater sense of family than in many a private home, where simple living is not frowned upon but encouraged, where opinions can differ without creating rancor, where money is not the measure of value, and where no one is trying to exploit anyone else." (Written by a resident of Friends Village.)

Teen Night at Wrightstown

Want to chill out and relax in a low-key atmosphere? Meet some old friends and make new ones? Play games or sit around and just talk? Come to Wrightstown Meeting at 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 15th. Bring a friend, something to contribute to the munchie counter, and $1 to help cover costs. Need a ride? Try carpooling with someone else's parents. Questions? Call Laurel Mueller at 355-0659 or the coordinator at 860-9747.

PYM Library Needs Volunteers

The PYM Library is going to a bar-code system for all of its books. Volunteers are needed to help with this project. If you are able to give some time down at Friends Center please call Rita Varley at 215-241-7220 or 1-800-220-0796, ext. 7220.

AFSC's Friend-Ship Kits Project

The American Friends Service Committee is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize by asking schools to participate in the Friend-Ship Kits Project. The Material Aids program of AFSC is asking friends to help build up AFSC's reserve of kits which enable AFSC to respond quickly to material assistance needs in this country and abroad. The kits include a school supplies kit, a hygiene kit, an art kit, and a sewing kit. The average cost of a kit is $4-$7. An additional $1 helps pay for the cost of shipping. If your First Day School wants to participate in this excellent program, please contact Debbie Block, 301 Jacob St., Seekonk, MA 02771; phone 508-336-9703; FAX 508-336-2254; e-mail DFB14@AOL.com.

BQM Singing Group Meets at Friends Village

The BQM Singing Group will meet next at Friends Village on Dolington Road in Newtown on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:30 PM. All Friends in the Quarter are invited to come and sing. Jonathan Snipes will lead the singing, with Chris Kerr at the piano. Bring your own musical instrument if you play one. We take a break for refreshments and beverages. For more information or directions call Sandy at 860-9747.

"Search for Shadows in the West of Ireland"

Opening reception with the artists is on March 7th, from 6-9 PM, with a lecture at 7:30 PM.

Quaker Quilts at Arch Street Meetinghouse

Patricia Herr Keller, an authority, writer, and curator of quilts will be speaking on "Quaker Quilts from the Delaware Valley: 1750-1890" on Saturday, April 19th at 2 PM, at Arch Street Meetinghouse. For more information call 215-627-2667.

Interfaith Housing Seeks Household Furniture

The Interfaith Housing Development Corporation of Bucks County (for whom our Young Friends volunteer at least once a year) is in great need of household furniture for previously homeless clients who have found somewhere to live. These people are being referred to the Interfaith Housing furniture warehouse by 32 local social service agencies. Interfaith Housing will accept furniture and linens and housewares and recycle them through the warehouse. There is no charge to those in need. If you have any of the items mentioned above, particularly beds, please call Interfaith Housing at 781-3949. If you can donate some time at the warehouse by driving to collect furniture, repairing furniture, stocking shelves, or acting as inventory clerk, call the number above.

Visitors from PYM's Middle School and Young Friends Programs

If your meeting has Middle School and Young Friends interested in PYM's programs but unable to take that first step, you can invite Mike Ayers (609) 478-4618 and Cookie Caldwell (241-7222) or Melanie Douty (241-7171) and Bill Robling (794-3802) to your First Day class. Mike and Cookie run the Young Friends programs and Melanie and Bill run the Middle School programs. They would be happy to visit and talk about the awesome things that happen at the gatherings.
